Updating Test Server

Postby pago_boss@yahoo.com.au » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:03 am

We have two sun servers in our organisation. Server A is used for Production while server B is used for Testing.

Server B also exists as a secondary backup to the Production data should the unforseen happens.

The two are more or less in tandem with each other, though we don’t update the Test server until a request is received to update the Test server with the Production data.

I am looking for some general guidance here and wish to post several more questions concerning this process.

(1) How do you update the Test server from the Production data?
(2) Do you just simply just do a backup and restore?
(3) Would I need to change my Sun client set-up and make sure I am pointing to the Test server before I complete the restoration process? If I don’t, will I corrupt the Production data by restoring the wrong server?
(4) What are the pitfalls I should look out for?

Thank you,

Pb

I'd use SQL backup and restore, assuming that both of the SQL setups are the same.

It will be much quicker and as long as you restore to the correct server there should be no problems.

Hi Steve,

The Sun servers are administered by our IT department so I wouldn’t know wether the set-up would be the same. Is there a way of finding this one out from the Sun client set-up?

Also, if I want to point my sun client log on to the Test server, would I need to change anything in the SUN.INI (machine-name = Test Server) and GLOBAL.CONFIG (<host>Test</host>) files?

What is the rationale for undertaking these steps?

Thank you,
