Creating Sun Database Backups
Page 2
One of the main responsibilities of a SunSystems administrator is to create daily Sun database backups. Server crashes and hard drive failures are inevitable due to equipment failure, lightning, power outages, simple age or defect-related failures, bugs, hackers, viruses, and, of course, human error. The most basic method of saving your data is to "backup". The backups can be scheduled to run during the night when the system is not accessed by users. Not having a backup can lead to tragic consequences should your hard drive breaks down, or you delete some important files. Another important utilization of Sun database backups is a creation of a Sun test environment. You restore a database backup on your test server and carry out all testing, upgrades etc there separately from the production box. In this article you will be demonstrated how to backup and restore a Sun database.

Database Backup
In its simplest form a database can be performed following these simple steps:
1. In Microsoft Enterprise Manager highlight the database you want to backup, right click, go to All Tasks and select Backup Database.

2. In the SQL Server Backup dialog window select “Overwrite existing media” and click Add button to add a backup destination. In our example I am going to create a backup file: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\sundb”,

Click Ok button to come back to the SQL Server Backup dialog window.

Please note that your backup file has been added as a destination.
3. Now press Ok button to start the backup process.

The progress bar will show you the percentage complete. You will be informed once the backup is successfully finished. Make sure that there are no errors during the backup.
4. It’s also possible to schedule a backup by selecting the “Schedule” and specifying the dates and time when the backup will be run.

Database Restore
After you have created the backup you can restore it in another SQL Server installation for testing purposes for example. Let’s now restore the database in Sun test environment.
1. Create a new data in your test environment by right clicking on “Databases” folder in  Microsoft Enterprise Manager and selecting “New Database”

I have created the database with the same name SUNDB in my test environment, but the name can be any one.

2. Right click on your newly created database, go to “All Tasks” and select “Restore Database”

3. On the “Restore database” window check “From device” and press Select Device button.
4. Navigate to the backup file you created in the step 2 of the database backup and click Ok.
5. On the tab “Option” check “Force restore over existing database”

6. Press Ok button to start the restore process.
7. The progress bar will show you the percentage complete. You will be informed once the restore is successfully finished. Make sure that there are no errors during the restore.
